Guest speakers come into HooverCamp in order to give our students a fresh and real-world perspective of the fields they are learning about.

Governor Kay Ivey

Governor Kay Ivey sent in a video of her commending HooverCamp and giving our students some words of encouragement for their efforts.

Tracie West

Tracie West is a member of the Alabama State Board of Education. She came into HooverCodes to tell our students about the importance of computer science education and of all the opportunities it opens.

Professor Jeff Gray, Ph.D

Dr. Jeff Gray is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Alabama, the Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Software and Systems Modeling, the Co-Chair of Governor Kay Ivey's Computer Science Advisory Council, and an ACM distinguished member.

Ravin Jesuthasan

Ravin Jesuthasan is a recognized futurist, global thought leader and author on the future of work and human capital. He has led multiple research efforts on the global workforce, the emerging digital economy, the rise of artificial intelligence and the transformation of work.

Ravin is Global leader of Transformation at Mercer and has lead numerous research projects for the World Economic Forum and the Peryon People Management Summit in Istanbul among others.

Avery Tarasov

Avery Tarasov is the Senior Manager of Security Engineering & Threat Operations at KIND.

He has also worked as an Information Security Incident Manager at Avon, and as a Traffic Quality Engineer at Microsoft.

Pamela Fox

Pamela Fox received her M.S. and B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Southern California.

Pamela Fox has worked at Khan Academy as Senior Content Creator for Computer Science. She has also worked at Google as a Developer Advocate and at Coursera as a Frontend Developer.

Pamela is also a lecturer at UC Berkeley.


One of Pamela's favorite projects that she has worked on was the Google Santa Tracker.

Kevin Zhen

Born and raised in Miami, FL Kevin Zhen recently graduated from Yale University where he majored in East Asian Studies.

During college, he cofounded “Homecooked,” a social dining app that organized small, communal meals at the homes of local cooks. A passionate writing tutor and life coach, Kevin has also taught more than 50 students for over 800+ hours at iLearnWorld, an online tutoring company based out of Birmingham, AL.

Outside of academics and work, Kevin has also won international breakdancing competitions and is one of the chief organizers of the annual Hip Hop Block Party. He is devoted to exploring innovative ways in which technology can be used to disrupt education, real-estate and more.

Hiro Kuwana

Hiro Kuwana received his B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Brown University.

Hiro is the co-founder of Kezari, a retail e-commerce business which aims to develop sustainable and comfortable fashion for travelers.

Hiro also works as a business analyst for Y2X Digital Solutions.

Asif Rahman

Asif Rahman graduated from Duke with a B.S. in Economics with a Finance Concentration and a minor in art history.

After graduating, Asif worked in investment banking at Wells Fargo Securities, private equity and Morgenthaler, and growth equity at Advance.

Asif's current project is his company, OfficeHours, which is a career development company catered towards investment banking analysts and other finance professionals who just kicked off their careers.

Uzma Nur

Uzma Nur graduated from UAB with a B.S. in Computer Science.

Uzma works at Fast Enterprises as an Implementation Consultant.

Mohammad Haider

Mohammad Haider received his B.S. and M.S. in engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He received his Ph.D at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Mohammad is currently an Associate Professor in UAB's Department of Electrical of Computer Engineering.
